About Us
Communities In Schools (CIS), the largest national non-profit organization devoted to prevent school drop-out, began operating in Washington in 1991 at the urging of Boeing and other Washington state employers. Their interest was to assist local public schools focus their energy in teaching rather than on fulfilling multiple roles –as service providers, coordinators and interventionists. Business and education leaders were impressed with the comprehensive and coordinated strategy that CIS brought to schools in other parts of the country by addressing the immediate needs of students while freeing teachers to teach.
In the State of Washington there are 12 CIS affiliates and a State office. Communities In Schools of Renton (CISR) is the largest and longest standing of them all. CISR started providing services to the Renton community in 1994 through a strong partnership between the City of Renton and the Renton School District. CISR has since provided direct services for Renton public school students (and their families) who suffer from racial disparities and may be at risk of academic failure. CISR also provides opportunities for community members to volunteer their time mentoring one-on-one with students who can benefit from a mature role model in their lives; someone who can help them further develop their self esteem, identity, and vision for their future.
Today, CISR programs serve all elementary and middle schools in the Renton school district and are expanding into the high schools. With your help, we will be able to continue providing free-of-charge services that bring balance to the lives of Renton public school students (and their families) in an effort to keep them in school through high school graduation, and give them a chance at a brighter future.
